Difference between Iodized and Non-Iodized Sea Salt

The natural sea salt usually contain huge amount of iodine. The salt which is iodized often contains extra iodine and thus it helps in fighting with deficiency of iodine. Most researchers have revealed that if a pregnant mother is deficient of iodine, it may cause mental retardation to her child. Therefore, you can very well assume the consequences of iodine deficiency. There are several other diseases that may be caused due to iodine deficiency. The non-iodized sea salt usually cannot provide appropriate quantity of iodine so as to counter the deficiencies. This is the reason; several countries have started a program through which iodine is added to the salt so that people can be defended against different kind of diseases.

The non-iodized sea salt is always created via harvesting ocean water. This water is then allowed to evaporate so that the salt crystals can get accumulated over there. The iodized sea salt is also manufactured via same process but potassium iodide is added to it. It is essential to add potassium iodide to make it perfect in taste and flavor. Taste of both iodized as well as non-iodized salt is same. Both provide the same taste, flavor or aroma.

It is true that both iodized and non-iodized sea salt have same nutritional value as both contain sodium and chloride. Well, the main difference between both is that sea salt is always healthy and natural alternative. There is also a difference of taste between both types of salt. Apart from taste, processing and texture is also different from the iodized sea salt. Sea salt also contains different kinds of minerals which are often absent in iodized sea salts. When it comes to quantity, it is true that both salts contain the same quantity of sodium chloride.

Coming to figures, the human body contains few hundred milligrams of sodium chloride to keep body healthy and fit. Some people often take higher quantity of sodium chloride in the form of iodized salt which is usually available in homes. It is always suggested that people should take 1500 to 2400 milligrams of sodium chloride to stay healthy. It is a perfect quantity for an adult. It is always suggested that people should not take high quantity of sodium chloride as it is the main reason for high blood pressure. So, one must always consume iodized salt but in right quantity because both deficiency as well as excess of iodized salt may cause various diseases in the body.
